James Shin
James Shin is the President of Film & Television at HYBE America, where he develops Korean and Korean American talent—both in the U.S. and abroad—across music, film, and TV. Born in Chicago to immigrant parents with entrepreneurial spirits, James was a violin and piano prodigy who earned a full scholarship to Phillips Andover and later attended Princeton, where he served as concertmaster. After recognizing signs of burnout from his musical career, he pivoted to entertainment, studying the many pathways through which he might break into the industry.
His first roles in entertainment were grueling and consisted of menial labor: he interned under legendary producer Mike Medavoy, and later worked in the mailroom of a talent agency—where many storied careers in Hollywood have begun. Through perseverance and grit, James built a career spanning music production, television, and film, working with artists such as Bruno Mars, Margaret Cho, and BTS. His credits include hit shows like Community, Breaking Bad, and Dave.
Now a key player in global entertainment, James believes there is no such thing as a wasted experience, and says that moments of frustration—or even failure—can always become opportunities. He also believes the day is coming when an entertainment studio will be led by a Korean American producer.
The Hollywood series celebrates 16 stories of Korean Americans working in the entertainment industry, which continues to grow towards more authentically diverse storytelling and leadership. The individuals who were interviewed exemplify what success can look like outside of conventional career paths, destigmatizing the starving artist narrative. The common thread between these actors, screenwriters, producers and designers in the field is the importance of perseverance, even if coming from a place of, what some have called, “delusion.”
The Legacy Project Hollywood series is made possible with financial support from The Korean American Foundation and the YS Kim Foundation, in partnership with The Korean American Leaders in Hollywood.
