Charlotte Koh
Charlotte Koh is the Executive Vice President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions for the Motion Picture Group at Lionsgate. She was born in Utah to Korean parents who immigrated to the United States in the late ’60s and early ’70s; they had gotten engaged in Korea before her father left for America to pursue graduate studies. The young family moved from Utah to Chicago shortly after Charlotte was born, as her mother’s brother lived in the city, and from early on, her parents emphasized the importance of education.
Though she studied political science in college, Charlotte also explored her interests in theater and film, taking coursework focused on the practice and philosophies of storytelling. After graduation, she worked at a management consulting firm in London whose clients included MTV Europe—an experience that opened the door to a successful and ongoing career in the entertainment industry. She has since held executive positions at Fox Searchlight, Marvel, and Hulu.
For future generations of Korean Americans looking to enter her line of work, she emphasizes that their ambitions be driven by inner authenticity—by finding the thing that brings both fulfillment and joy.
The Hollywood series celebrates 16 stories of Korean Americans working in the entertainment industry, which continues to grow towards more authentically diverse storytelling and leadership. The individuals who were interviewed exemplify what success can look like outside of conventional career paths, destigmatizing the starving artist narrative. The common thread between these actors, screenwriters, producers and designers in the field is the importance of perseverance, even if coming from a place of, what some have called, “delusion.”
The Legacy Project Hollywood series is made possible with financial support from The Korean American Foundation and the YS Kim Foundation, in partnership with The Korean American Leaders in Hollywood.
