Pat Lee
Pat Lee, whose Korean name is Lee Kyung Hee, was born in 1951 in Seoul, Korea, the fifth daughter in a family of seven children. She admits that in her youth she was often impulsive, a characteristic which gave her a taste for life and would drive her to immigrate to the United States with her husband in 1971.
Landing in Oakland, Pat tells us that her husband had to attend college then work in the evenings, often getting home at midnight. Without her family and friends nearby, Pat found a need to mature quickly to support their young family.
After enrolling herself in cosmetology school, she had two children, and in 1977, she made the decision to buy a small market around what would become Koreana Plaza. She tells us that her fellow entrepreneurs, as well as her customers, helped her gain her footing in running a small business. Over time, a hairdresser, video store, billiards bar, and even an acupuncturist moved into vacant stores nearby, and Pat’s own business greatly benefitted from the increase in foot traffic.
Soon enough, the plaza grew so much that customers would drive in from San Francisco, Concord, Fremont, and other towns beyond Oakland to get a sense of home. She tells us that in the early days of the East Bay Korean community, the arrival of a fellow Korean immigrant would be cause for a gathering with shared food and stories; there were no Korean restaurants, but the community had one another.
Although much has changed since then, Pat encourages the younger generation to work hard and with sincerity in building the lives they want to live.
In collaboration with Koreatown Youth + Community Center of Los Angeles, Koreatown Storytelling Program is an intergenerational, multilingual and multiethnic oral history and digital media program that teaches ethnographic and storytelling techniques to high school students and elders to investigate cultural practices and racial, economic and health inequities in our community.
