Lauren Kim
Lauren Kim is an urban planner from Orange County, California, who strives to bring joy to community and cultural centers. Born in Long Beach, she considers Irvine her hometown, though she reflects on how growing up among manicured, material landscapes left her searching for a deeper sense of place and connection.
Endlessly curious as a child, she tells us that a large part of her work is motivated by a search for wonder—whether it appears in the form of luscious garden plazas which shelter the stray cats by her grandparents’ apartment, or reframing her work and field to return joy to all spaces.
As someone who studied and worked in spaces that were predominantly white, Lauren tells us that she is careful to represent the diversity of communities that are not always represented in environmental and urban incubators. She encourages us to ask ourselves the question, “What is the voice I want to use to positively inhabit my community?”—in searching and reflecting on ways that all of us, no matter which communities we call home, might make an impact in the spaces we frequent.
Lauren hopes to bring a community-based model of care to her father Han Jik Kim’s clinic, which she describes as a clinic, apothecary, and public education space.
In collaboration with Koreatown Youth + Community Center (KYCCLA), Koreatown Storytelling Program is an intergenerational, multilingual and multiethnic oral history and digital media program that teaches ethnographic and storytelling techniques to high school students and elders to investigate cultural practices and racial, economic and health inequities in our community.
Special thanks to the Koreatown Storytelling Program (KSP) and the Koreatown Youth and Community Center of Los Angeles, California for hosting this Legacy Project recording.
