Now more than ever, it’s crucial that we come together to support organizations in our community in need. As a fellow nonprofit, we believe in uplifting one another. We encourage you to learn more about KASEC and consider supporting their vital work.

Today, we’re highlighting the Korean American Special Education Center (KASEC), an incredible non-profit based in Los Angeles and Orange County that provides a wide range of integrative services and resources for individuals with developmental disabilities, from developmental screenings and behavioral consultations to after school and community empowerment programs.
Kevin Chang is a community ambassador for KASEC (@kasec_ca), where he has been involved with Harmonia Ensemble since its founding. He is also a program coordinator for Asians and Pacific Islanders with Disabilities of California.
Born and raised in California, Kevin shares with us that his parents enrolled him in special education classes until the 5th grade; diagnosed with ASD, he tells us how, throughout elementary and middle school, he didn’t really “feel like part of other groups.” Yet community, he explains, has always been important to him, even when socializing with others “wasn’t always easy.” A graduate of CSU Fullerton, Kevin now works to create spaces of community for individuals living with disabilities, making sure that people who interact with KASEC feel welcomed.
An avid musician, Kevin was first noticed by KASEC during high school when someone asked if he would be willing to perform for a charity event; since then, he has helped grow KASEC’s performance group, Harmonia, from a collective of five musicians to a larger ensemble comprised of strings, woodwinds, and percussion. He tells us that both ensemble and community work rely on everyone pitching in to make something wonderful together, hopefully sharing a good time along the way. Kevin encourages us all to “take that chance, take that leap” in participating in our own communities, giving back to the treasured spaces we each hold close.
