In Sook Lee
Born in 1938 in the countryside of Icheon, Korea, In Sook reflects on a childhood marked by both natural beauty and the disruptions of war. She recalls the tall mountains of her hometown, the sweetness of spring mulberries, and the call of the cuckoo bird—memories that endure alongside scenes of fear and survival during the Korean War, from soldiers passing through her village hungry and retreating, to planes bombing her town and families hiding in caves.
Though girls in her town were not expected to continue their education, In Sook persisted, walking long distances to attend a Methodist missionary school. Her encounters with American missionaries and soldiers sparked a desire to one day travel to America, lest she “end up like a frog stuck to a well,” a dream which came to fruition after joining her husband, Reverend Chang Soon Lee, in California.
