Han Jik Kim
Han Jik Kim is an acupuncturist and herbalist who practices traditional Korean medicine in Central Los Angeles. Born in Liberation Village, Seoul, on December 22nd, 1965, Han Jik notes that he was born on Dongji, or the Winter Solstice.
Growing up alongside his younger brother, he tells us that his family moved often during his elementary school years, where he describes himself as having been a quiet student. From an early age, Han Jik expressed a curious interest in questions that could not be answered simply, as well as in how we might interact with those things less material: in middle school, he remembers wanting to be a philosopher, and in high school, a novelist. He considered pursuing theology in middle school as well, though he later enrolled in Chung-Ang University to pursue a different course of study.
In 1988, Han Jik joined his family in the United States, who had immigrated two years before him, and in 1991, he enrolled in South Baylo University to study traditional medicine; his uncle had informed him that the school offered instruction in the Korean language.
Today, Han Jik operates his own clinic, with most of his patients being non-Korean, and reminds us of the importance of looking at things holistically, as well as being master over our own bodies.
In collaboration with Koreatown Youth + Community Center (KYCCLA), Koreatown Storytelling Program is an intergenerational, multilingual and multiethnic oral history and digital media program that teaches ethnographic and storytelling techniques to high school students and elders to investigate cultural practices and racial, economic and health inequities in our community.
Special thanks to the Koreatown Storytelling Program (KSP) and the Koreatown Youth and Community Center of Los Angeles, California for hosting this Legacy Project recording.
