About

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Chris Detrych came to America in 1985 at 3 months old where he was adopted by a Caucasian family in Detroit, Michigan. Growing up in a predominately white neighborhood in the Midwest, Chris shares how he struggled with his angst regarding his identity and having no one around who looked like him.

Chris eventually got involved with mentoring young Asian adoptees, hoping to be a positive role model for other struggling adoptees. Through mentoring and involvement with the Korean adoptee community, he shares how he’s been able to come to terms with his complex emotions surrounding his adoptee identity.

Chris is currently the President of Korean Adoptees of Chicago (KAtCH) and also volunteers with Connect-A-Kid, a non-profit mentoring organization for transracial adoptees.
